AirPrint Setup Guide
Confirming AirPrint Compatibility
Apple maintains a public list of AirPrint-compatible printers, but most printers manufactured in the past ten years from HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, Xerox, and Lexmark support the protocol. Look for the AirPrint logo on the box or the manufacturer's product page.
Older printers without AirPrint can be enabled with a Wi-Fi print server like the manufacturer's free utility or third-party software running on a Mac that is always on. The AirPrint experience through a print server is slightly less seamless than with a native AirPrint printer.
Network Requirements
AirPrint works only when the printer and Apple device are on the same network. This is straightforward at home but requires planning in offices with multiple subnets or guest networks. Enable Bonjour or mDNS forwarding in the router or access point to allow AirPrint discovery across subnets.
Avoid placing the printer on a guest network. Most consumer routers isolate guest devices from main network devices, which prevents AirPrint discovery entirely. The printer should live on the same network as the laptops and phones that will print to it.
Troubleshooting Discovery and Printing
If a printer does not appear in the AirPrint dialog, restart the printer first, then the iPhone or Mac. Check that the printer firmware is current and that no router firewall rule blocks port 631 or multicast DNS traffic.
If AirPrint discovers the printer but jobs fail to print, look at the printer's web interface for queued jobs that may be stuck on a previous error. Cancel any stuck jobs and retry.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need to install drivers for AirPrint?
- No, AirPrint requires no driver download or installation. The printer announces its capabilities to Apple devices automatically.
- Can I AirPrint over the internet?
- No, AirPrint is a local network protocol. For remote printing use a manufacturer cloud service or third-party cloud print solution.
- Why does my printer disappear from AirPrint sometimes?
- Sleep mode and Wi-Fi power saving features cause this. Disable Wi-Fi power saving on the printer and reduce its sleep timer if discovery is unreliable.
