Mobile Printing from iPhone and iPad

What AirPrint Is and How It Works

AirPrint is Apple's built-in wireless printing protocol. It allows iPhone, iPad, and Mac to discover and print to compatible printers automatically, with no app installation, driver download, or configuration. Most printers sold in the past decade from major manufacturers support AirPrint out of the box.

The two devices simply need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. AirPrint uses Bonjour service discovery to find available printers, then communicates using standard internet printing protocol over the local network.

Printing from iPhone Step by Step

Open the document, photo, email, or web page you want to print. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up). Scroll down and tap Print. Tap Select Printer to see the list of AirPrint-enabled printers on your network and pick one. Adjust copies, range, and color options if available, then tap Print in the upper-right corner.

If no printers appear, confirm the printer is powered on, not in deep sleep, and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone. A guest network is a common cause of failed discovery, since most home routers isolate guest devices from main network devices.

Troubleshooting Common AirPrint Issues

If the printer appears but printing fails, restart the printer and your iPhone, then try again. Check that printer firmware is up to date through the manufacturer's app or web interface. Some routers block multicast DNS traffic by default; enable Bonjour or mDNS forwarding in router settings if printers refuse to appear after a restart.

For older printers without AirPrint support, you can use the manufacturer's free iOS app, which often supports a similar set of features through a vendor-specific protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my printer need an app to work with iPhone?
If your printer supports AirPrint, no app is needed. Just use the standard Print option from the Share menu.
Why does my AirPrint printer not show up?
Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network, and that the printer is awake and not in error state.
Can I print PDFs from iPhone Files app?
Yes, open the PDF in Files, tap the Share button, and choose Print to send it to any AirPrint printer on your network.
